  • Automated OCR of digital files
  • Scaling key areas of RapidILL's technologies: routing, holdings index, APIs

2026 H1

Automated OCR of digital files

What's New
Highlights
Impact
A new service that processes lender-provided files through an automated OCR to make them machine-readable. The RapidILL service checks all received files for accessibility. If a file is already machine-readable, it is delivered to the borrower with its accessibility features intact. If a file is not machine-readable, the service applies OCR processing to add this accessility component before delivering the file to the borrowing library. The service will improve the accessibility of files, and reduce the need for library staff to manually run files through an OCR process if that is a standard part of their workflows.

Scaling key areas of RapidILL's technologies: routing, holdings index, APIs

What's New
Highlights
Impact
The RapidILL team continually seeks ways to improve the service’s backend processes. The 2026 priorities include updates to routing, the holdings index, and the APIs to improve performance, efficiency, stability, and to support new features. This work will ensure the system continues to operate optimally, without impacting service quality or processing times. As new members join the community each month, enhancing these processes is essential to supporting all users’ borrowing and lending activities.
