Locations

The following table describes the ways in which Decision Center identifies locations.

Item location Where patron is registered Where transaction occurred
Agency Locations Served grouped together in agency map Locations Served grouped together in agency map Locations Served grouped together in agency map
Branch First location in Locations Served in which lower level location resides - appears in Decision Center as the Owning Location First location in Locations Served in which lower level location resides - appears in Decision Center as the Home Library First location in Locations Served in which lower level location resides - appears in Decision Center as the Transaction Location
Intra‑branch Location in the item record Location in the patron record Location associated with the statistics group number in the statname file
Statistics group number n/a n/a Statistics group number associated with the login that performed the transaction

It is possible to have the same location code in multiple Locations Served entries, each used by the system for different purposes. Decision Center uses the first Locations Served table entry in which the specified code is found, so putting entries that include all location codes at the top of the Locations Served table prevents reporting by other Locations Served groupings.

Deleted Locations

After you delete locations from your system, they no longer appear in the list of available locations when you edit initial filters or remedy filters. However, deleted locations remain a part of your historical data and thus continue to appear in any result set that includes activity from dates before the deletion.

Location Data Sources

The following are descriptions of the sources for various forms of location data presented by Decision Center.

Agency

The agency.

Agencies

To determine agency names, Decision Center first identifies the statistics group number for each transaction. The system then finds the location code associated with the statistics group in the Statistical Group Maintenance table. (For more information on the Statistical Group Maintenance table, see the Sierra WebHelp or the Millennium Innovative Guide & Reference.) Decision Center looks up the location code in the Locations Served table and uses the associated branch location code. (For more information on the Locations Served table, see the Sierra WebHelp or the Millennium Innovative Guide & Reference.) The agency code and name corresponding to the branch location code come from the Agency Map file, which is maintained by Innovative. If the system cannot find the location code or the branch name in the Locations Served table, Decision Center displays the location code that appeared in the Statistical Group Maintenance table.

Bib Location

The bib location.

Bib Locations

To determine the bib location, Decision Center first identifies the location code in the bib record. The system then looks up the location code in the Locations Served table and uses the associated branch location code. In most cases, the bib record location code is a branch location code. (For more information on the Locations Served table, see the Sierra WebHelp or the Millennium Innovative Guide & Reference.) The descriptive name associated with the branch location code comes from the Branches table. (For more information on the Branches table, see the Sierra WebHelp or the Millennium Innovative Guide & Reference.) If the system cannot find the location code or the branch name in the Locations Served table, Decision Center displays the location code that appeared in the bib record.

Branch

A specific library branch.

Branches

To determine the branch, Decision Center first identifies the location code (shelf code) in the item record. The system then looks up the location code in the Locations Served file and uses the associated branch location code. The descriptive name associated with the branch location code comes from the Branches file. If the system cannot find the location code or the branch name in the Locations Served file, Decision Center displays the location code that appeared in the item record.

Network Location

The network location.

Network Location

Decision Center recognizes the network location logins assigned to various IPs (and IP ranges) by your library. You assign IPs to network location logins using the Limit NETWORK Access option of your Innovative system. (For more information on limiting network access, see the Sierra WebHelp or the Millennium Innovative Guide & Reference.)

Decision Center identifies each network location by the COMMENT field entered when your library set up its network access tables. If the COMMENT field is empty, Decision Center uses the assigned login name.

Order Location

The order location.

Order Locations

To determine the Order Location, Decision Center first identifies the location code (shelf code) in the order record. The system then looks up the location code in the Locations Served table and uses the associated branch location code. (For more information on the Locations Served table, see the Sierra WebHelp or the Millennium Innovative Guide & Reference.) The descriptive name associated with the branch location code comes from the Branches table. (For more information on the Branches table, see the Sierra WebHelp or the Millennium Innovative Guide & Reference.) If the system cannot find the location code or the branch name in the Locations Served table, Decision Center displays the location code that appeared in the order record. If the order location code is an empty string or consists only of spaces, the system uses the heading Unknown.

If an order record includes multiple location codes, Decision Center applies each code to the number of items specified for that location.

Owning Location

The owning location.

Owning Locations

To determine the owning location, Decision Center first identifies the location code (shelf code) in the item record. The system then looks up the location code in the Locations Served table and uses the associated branch location code. (For more information on the Locations Served table, see the Sierra WebHelp or the Millennium Innovative Guide & Reference.) The descriptive name associated with the branch location code comes from the Branches table. (For more information on the Branches table, see the Sierra WebHelp or the Millennium Innovative Guide & Reference.) If the system cannot find the location code or the branch name in the Locations Served table, Decision Center displays the location code that appeared in the item record.

Patron Home Library

The patron's home library.

Patron Home Library

To determine the patron's home library, Decision Center first identifies the location code for the patron's home library in the patron record associated with each transaction. The system then looks up the location code in the Locations Served table and uses the associated branch location code. (For more information on the Locations Served table, see the Sierra WebHelp or the Millennium Innovative Guide & Reference.) The descriptive name associated with the branch location code comes from the Branches table. (For more information on the Branches table, see the Sierra WebHelp or the Millennium Innovative Guide & Reference.) If the system cannot find the location code or the branch name in the Locations Served table, Decision Center displays the location code that appeared in the patron record.

Shelf Location

The shelf location.

Shelf Locations

To determine the shelf location, Decision Center first identifies the location code (shelf code) in the item record. The system then looks up the descriptive name associated with the location code in the Branches table. (For more information on the Branches table, see the Sierra WebHelp or the Millennium Innovative Guide & Reference.) If the system cannot find the location code in the Branches table, Decision Center displays the location code that appeared in the item record.

Statistics Group

The statistics group.

Statistics Groups

Statistics groups are aggregations of workstations and/or logins organized to facilitate statistical analysis of activity. Statistics groups and group labels are defined by your library in the Statistical Group Maintenance table. (For more information on the Statistical Group Maintenance table, see the Sierra WebHelp or the Millennium Innovative Guide & Reference.) Library staff assign each workstation and login to one of the defined statistics groups.

Transaction Location

The transaction location.

Transaction Locations

To determine the transaction locations, Decision Center first identifies the Statistics Group number for each transaction. (For more information on the Locations Served table, see the Sierra WebHelp or the Millennium Innovative Guide & Reference.) The descriptive name associated with the branch location code comes from the Branches table. (For more information on the Branches table, see the Sierra WebHelp or the Millennium Innovative Guide & Reference.) If the system cannot find the location code or the branch name in the Locations Served table, Decision Center displays the location code that appeared in the Statistical Group Maintenance table.
