Refine a search

On the Search Results page, you can refine a search to narrow the search results. For example, you can limit the search results to resources that were published in the last 10 years and are available online or in the Web Resource format.

The Search Results page with the Refine Results panel.

Refine a search with Boolean operators

You can refine your search results by using Boolean operators to combine or exclude keywords.

  • Use AND to narrow results by including multiple terms.

  • Use OR to broaden results by including alternative terms.

  • Use NOT to exclude specific terms from results.

When combining AND and OR in the same search, use parentheses to group related terms.

Examples:

  • ethics AND (cloning OR "stem cell research")

  • (ethic OR moral) AND (genetic engineering OR cloning)
