Enabling the PubMed External Lookup
External origins send one of several possible meta tags in OpenURLs that can be resolved by PubMed's Efetch external lookup service. In order to account for the variations, Innovative suggests setting up the PubMed external lookup according to the procedure below. See the Origins Information on CSDirect for updates and additional suggestions. You might need to make adjustments to the PubMed external lookup procedure, such as creating an additional field selector or using a different regular expression, if the OpenURL of an external origin uses meta tags for PMID other than one of the following:
- pmid=PMIDVALUE
- id=pmid:PMIDVALUE
- id=info:pmid:PMIDVALUE
- rft_id=pmid:PMIDVALUE
To enable the PubMed external lookup, follow these steps:
- Create a field selector for the PMID meta tags in the OpenURL from the external origin.
- Create an external lookup.
- Configure external origins that send OpenURLs containing the PMID meta tags. Choose PubMedID in the External lookup options drop-down menu when configuring these external origins
-
Edit the pubmed.xml mapping file, if necessary.
The pubmed.xml maps the response from the external lookup server back to an OpenURL.
The default file is provided with WebBridge LR in the WebPAC live directory. If the external lookup service makes changes to their response, or if your library has special needs with regard to mapping the response to an OpenURL, you can edit the pubmed.xml file.NOTE
XML files can be edited in text editors. Innovative does not provide support for editing XML files.
